由于織物發(fā)出的黃光減少，白光增加，肉眼也可感覺(jué)到與黃色互為補(bǔ)色的織物（如：粉藍(lán)色、粉紅色、粉紫色等）明顯變得更鮮艷和明亮，這就是增艷效果。
熒光增白劑研究、華東理工大學(xué)博士生導(dǎo)師沈永嘉教授說(shuō)，熒光增白劑是一種光學(xué)調(diào)理劑。它的作用原理是將不可見(jiàn)的紫外光轉(zhuǎn)化成肉眼可見(jiàn)的藍(lán)光，與織物本身的黃光相疊加，發(fā)出白光，達(dá)到柔和、賞心悅目的增白效果，早已廣泛應(yīng)用于紡織、造紙、洗滌劑、塑料等眾多領(lǐng)域。沈教授認(rèn)為熒光增白劑是在衣服上涂了一層白色的東西來(lái)遮蓋污漬這種說(shuō)法很可笑，因?yàn)闊晒庠霭讋┡c水一樣，都是透明無(wú)色的，根本就無(wú)法遮蓋污漬。我們把它添加到洗衣液中是因?yàn)樗腥魏萎a(chǎn)品都無(wú)法替代的色彩調(diào)理功能。
